This just in: Lidl US has carried out another round of corporate layoffs, a spokesperson for the chain confirmed to Grocery Dive. The rep didn't say how many employees were let go, noting only that the layoffs covered three business units within the company. Numerous LinkedIn posts from impacted workers noted that this was part of a corporate restructuring plan. Last year, Lidl US laid off around 200 employees as part of restructuring. Lidl is trying to rightsize its operation several months after naming a new CEO, and just a few weeks after naming a raft of new executives, including its first chief customer officer. Close rival Aldi, meanwhile, just announced it plans to open 800 stores over the next five years. Story by Catherine Douglas M., with reporting support from yours truly.

Walmart, Aldi and dollar stores are pushing full-service grocers to update the way they sell goods. Here are a few fresh ideas from Lead Editor Jeff Wells to stay ahead.
“Could Aldi’s supermarkets conquer America?” That’s the headline of a story that ran in The Economist last week. It's a sensational bit of display copy, but it does highlight how Aldi as well as other discount retailers seem pretty unstoppable right now. Full-service grocers know these retailers are a major threat — but I don't think they're moving quickly and boldly enough to counter them. In my latest column, I size up the renewed threat that low-price grocers pose and offer some fresh ideas on how to compete with them.
Pardon the Disruption: Can discount retailers be stopped?

Trader Joe’s has increased its banana prices from 19 cents individually to 23 cents, a spokesperson for the grocery chain said Monday in an email. The 21% increase for individual bananas at Trader Joe’s is notable as grocers have long spotlighted bananas in their marketing efforts as a way of signaling low prices to shoppers. #grocery #TraderJoes #bananas #freshfood https://lnkd.in/guFnS5mR
